The reconstruction of the House of Foscolo is an act of honour to the memory and work of the poet by the city in which he was born and lived until the age of fourteen. The house stood in the district of Panagia Odigitria, diagonally opposite the church of the same name, at the corner of Foskolou and Kyriakou Xenou streets.

After the earthquakes of 1953, the site of the poet’s house remained vacant, landscaped by the Municipality of Zakynthos as a small garden; later, through the efforts of the late Prefect of Zakynthos Andreas Ioannou, a cenotaph was erected in the poet’s memory, on which was placed the statue “Mourning Angel”, a work by the sculptor Ioannis Vitsaris.

Emeritus Professor Dionysios Zivas, a founding member of the Association, who served as Vice-President and as President after the death of Nikos Lalotis, donated the architectural study of the House, on the basis of which building permit no. 132/2012 was issued. In 2013 the Association concluded a programme cooperation agreement with the Municipality of Zakynthos for the management of the building and the creation of a museum space.

In 2014 a programme agreement was signed between the Municipality of Zakynthos and the Region of the Ionian Islands (Regional Unit of Zakynthos) for the Region of the Ionian Islands to undertake the rebuilding and completion of the “House of Foscolo”, a project awarded to the Consortium K. Morfis – D. Chalvatzaras, with a budget of €210,000.00.

In 2016 construction of the building was completed: the House consists of two levels with a total floor area of 106.80 m², with morphological features analogous to the buildings of the period. In front of the House, on the pedestrian street of Xenou Street, Vitsaris’s sculpture, the “Mourning Angel”, was reinstalled.

Since 2017 the Cultural Association Ugo Foscolo has been based on the ground floor.
